Geelong Wine

The Moorabool Valley : Birthplace of Geelong Wine
The Moorabool Valley is where Geelong’s wine revival began in the 1960s, starting with Idyll Vineyard. In the 1970s, Bannockburn was founded by Stuart Hooper, with Gary Farr leading its rise. Nearby, Clyde Park and the Austins followed, while by Farr and Lethbridge Wines cemented the region's reputation for innovation and excellence.
Running from Bannockburn to Meredith, the valley’s soils mix ancient limestone seabeds with volcanic basalt, shaped by the Moorabool River. The cool, dry climate nurtures standout Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Shiraz, while varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon can struggle in cooler years.
A region where geology meets passion, Moorabool continues to define Geelong’s modern wine identity.
The Bellarine Peninsula : Cool Coastal Elegance
Cool sea breezes and scenic coastline shape the South-east of Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula. Its Antarctic-influenced climate favours crisp whites like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, with elegant sparkling wines and light Pinot Noir and Shiraz also thriving.
Established with Scotchmans Hill in 1982, the region now boasts vibrant cellar doors, bayside vineyards, and a growing reputation for refined cool-climate wines — all under the broader Geelong GI.
The Surf Coast/Otways : Cool-Climate Wines from Forest and Sea
The Surf Coast and Otways combine coastal influence with volcanic soils and rainforest rainfall. Vineyards stretch inland from Waurn Ponds through the Otway Hinterland, thriving in a cool, wet climate ideal for pinot noir, chardonnay, riesling, and pinot gris.
Producers range from large estates like Mount Duneed to small, hands-on makers like Heroes and Sierra Reed, sourcing fruit from prized sites across the region. While the Surf Coast is famed for its beaches, the wines are just as shaped by the ancient, fertile landscape of the Otways.
